Extended Life

[Consider a] bacteria swimming up a chemical gradient. It is their very organization (as well as their behaviour) that points us observers to the fact that sugar is significant to these organisms, while other chemicals are neutral or noxious. It also seems as if more of it is better than less. This is not a fact of the matter of the same kind as that describing a chemical reaction. It is a relational fact impossible to appreciate unless we have an organism present for which the effects of the chemical encounter on the processes of self-construction and self-distinction make sense as being good or bad.
